Tales of the adventures, drama and revelry these pioneering enthusiasts experienced as they overcame
many obstacles to enjoy a few hours of skiing, ice-skating and tobogganing on the slopes of Mount
Cockayne.
As well as producing skiers of international calibre, the Club discovered members with outstanding
qualities of determination, enterprise and a capacity for having fun.
How to extract a determined kea from its occupation of the ladies’ long drop; how to extract husbands
and fathers from the Sheffield Hotel; how to extract a bulldozer off the side of the road with ten
disabled helpers, were some examples of situations which called for novel resourcefulness.
The book draws on personal recollections from members past and present and is illustrated with
more than 200 photographs. These include many stunning images from early black and white glass
plates and later colour photos, which depict the people, events and developments that have been part
of the Club’s continuing story.
